The Weimaraner Association Open Field Trial Stake on Grouse At Kirkhaugh Northumberland On 1st September 2010 By kind permission of Nick Walton & Family

Judges Mrs Rita Howard and Mr Roy Cullen

The weather was bright and sunny with a gentle breeze.
The card was made up with GSPs, GWPs, a Weimaraner and a Large Munsterlander.
Due to the moorland access all dogs worked a backwind to start although at times the breeze was not evident and every dog had the opportunity to HPR on the first round. The most experienced handler/dog partnerships took full advantage of this. Following a brief lunch eight dogs progressed through for a second run. Again all the dogs had the opportunity to produce but one by one dogs eliminated themselves. However, some excellent dog work was witnessed and, at the end of the day, two dogs were taken to the water. The water blind retrieve was a 10 metre swim across a flowing river and this task was completed well.

AWARDS

1st placing: MR TOMMY BRECHNEY with TRUE GEM OF CAWBURN

On the dog's first round she covered the ground well. The bitch found birds, held her point and this task culminated in two birds being retrieved competently.
2nd Run. The bitch excelled in this round. She got out well competently covering the ground. She had a head wind where she tracked and pointed birds. The bitch was totally steady and worked to command in flushing birds allowing the guns to be ready. A covey of four birds got up (three birds being shot). She was asked to retrieve two which she did with style. Minimum handling from handler. A excellent gamefinder and partnership. A true grouse dog.

4th placing: MR CHRIS GRAY with TRUDVANG BALDER

1st Run. The dog got out covering the ground well. A bird was shot from behind and landed into the reeds about 30 yards on the left hand bank in front of the dog. Dog was steady. Bird retrieved. Dog continued bird pointed not shot. The dog made a further retrieve from another bird shot.
2nd Run. The dog commenced his run by being sent straight away on a runner. The runner proved not to be in the area it was thought and with the dog taking its own line the long runner was picked from the slope right to the top of the fence line. Another retrieve was achieved on a bird shot but not pointed. The dog got out well and a good game finder.

The first placed dog attained the title of FTCH with this win which was well deserved.

Many thanks to the Weimaraner Association for organizing the Field Trial, the Sponsor who funded the day, along with Nick and his Family for allowing the Trial to be held on such wonderful grouse moors and providing wonderful refreshments at the conclusion of the day, also not forgetting the Guns, Richard, Philip and Geoff who consistently put birds in the bag throughout the day.

The Weimaraner Association All-Aged Field Trial at Coates Marsh Grange, Carlton held on 28th September 2010 by Kind permission of Mr P.D.Leek.

Judges Mr K Scattergood, Mr R. Gould.

The trial on this excellent ground was run on stubble, game cover, sugar beet, carrots and parsnips. The mild weather with little to no wind made for a difficult day with poor scenting conditions. We saw many English partridge and also pheasants, hares and rabbits.

Awards

3rd Place First Choice Lady GSP b, owned and handled by F Hughes

This steady and responsive bitch was quietly handled and first pointed and produced on command a cock pheasant from the rough along a ditch. Next on some low sugar beet she pointed staunchly and eventually produced a rabbit, which could not be shot safely.
On her next run again in sugar beet with very little wind she pointed a pheasant and was steady to flush. On her third run she worked a large area of rough, pointed a rabbit and made a blind retrieve on a hare which was returned gently to hand.

4th Place Bedeslea Tiger By The Tail at Bryantscroft, owned and handled by R. Major

This dogs first run was in low sugar beet separated from the ploughed field on the left by a ditch. He ran with enthusiasm and covered his ground well. A hare got up unseen by the dog and ran onto the plough where it was shot by the gun on the left flank. The blind retrieve across the beet, across the ditch and into the plough was made to look easy by a dog that responded well to the quiet commands and the hare was brought steadily to hand
On his second run in cover he had a stylish point on a hen pheasant, which he flushed on command. Working on he then made another good blind retrieve on a hare.

Both these dogs easily completed their blind retrieve across water which was a realistic test of what would be expected of an accomplished rough shooting dog even after a hard days work in the shooting season.

We would like to thank all those who contributed to the success and enjoyment of the day even under the adverse conditions. Our thanks go to our host David Leek, to the guns who all shot so well David Leek, Richard Marsh and Phillip Marsh, to the red flag Shirley Cooper, to picking up dog handler Phil Hawsworth and of course the competitors. Thank you to The Weimaraner Association for their invitation to judge this trial and for their kind gifts, and finally a big thank you to Penny Pickstone who, as always, organised everything superbly.

R. Gould.
