GUNDOG WORKING TEST 2024
Sunday 18th August 2024 Stourhead Wiltshire The WA is delighted to announce the results of its GWT held ON 18Th August 2024 at Stourhead, Wiltshire. The test was sponsored by Skinners, and by Test Valley Lanyards.
Sincere thanks go to the hosts: The National Trust, Stourhead Western Estates, and Gary (Water) and Tim (Grazier), and to the Gasper Fly-Fishing Club. Especial thanks to our judges. We had Alix Johnson [B Panel], and the judges listed in the results below. Water judges, Shirley Mattravers and Dave Madden were reassigned to do a “mystery retrieve” in place of water as there was a warning from the hosts that the main lake and other water was contaminated with blue-green algae. Fiona Smith had 12 puppies which was a recent high in numbers, and Fiona did her own mystery retrieve. I must thank the volunteers who assisted with the early morning set-up and afternoon take-down. Thanks to Dee and Di and Elaine on kitchen patrol and set up. Further thanks to Elaine for organising the raffle and who raised £145 from our most generous handlers and attendees. Chrissie Sterritt was also on hand, boosting morale with her infectious enthusiasm. The day went off well and the weather was benign, bright but not too warm. was probably one of the most satisfying for me. I thank the open handlers who had to make a second long trek to the Open hunting ground for the mystery retrieve. It did extend the duration of the day, but there was a good atmosphere as the end of proceedings neared! The Heathstone Memorial Salver for the highest scoring Weimaraner (97pts) was presented to Suzi Burton with Aschfahl Kepa Spy von Trubon, in puppy. |

Heathstone Memorial Salver for Achievement in Working Tests
In 2021 an inaugural event, the brainchild of Lloyd Birch (Worcester Gundogs) pre-covid was held which pitted teams of HPRs organised by breed in competition along working test lines. Breed team selection was to be by selection processes designed by the breed clubs, and it was expected where breeds were represented by more than one society, there would be collaboration. The FT Secretaries of the two trialling Weimaraner societies devised a selection process by which handlers could earn their place in the team by securing points and places in GWTs in the lead up to the team competition. By far and away the most accomplished dog in our breed participating in the process was Trubon Harleigh Trojan, handled by Austin Lindley. Sadly Harleigh was tragically lost to Austin and his family before he could take up his place in the team. Austin was present on the day to cheer on his colleagues and they achieved a 3rd place out of 13 breeds. |
Before the announcement of the official results of the day at yesterday's WA GWT @ Stourhead, I was privileged to present the Heathstone Memorial Salver to Austin in respect of Harleigh, and in commemoration of Tony and Pauline Fleming (Heathstone) who bequeathed a substantial legacy to both breed clubs.
This salver will become a perpetual award for achievement in a working test format by a Weimaraner. It is somehow very fitting that the WA was able to make this first presentation to Austin. Nigel Wroe WA FT Secretary 21/08/2022 |

A gigantic thank you to all the handlers who were so sporting during the day and creating a great atmosphere, but importantly for leaving the ground in such a pristine condition. Doing a final survey before leaving you would not know that we had all been there. Thank you all. Nigel Wroe WA FT Secretary 21/08/2022 |
HPR Team Challenge held at Piper’s Farm,
Near Tewkesbury 5th September 2021
Held in aid of the British Heart Foundation
Near Tewkesbury 5th September 2021
Held in aid of the British Heart Foundation
Today four Weimaraners competed against 44 other dogs from 11 HPR breeds at the inaugural HPR Team Challenge, an open working test standard competition hosted and managed by Lloyd Birch and the Worcester Gundog Society. It was held at Pipers Farm near Tewkesbury on farmland comprising extensive fields of stubble, some woodland and in water at a splendid wide and wonderfully picturesque lake, under blue skies with occasional cloud and a light breeze. It did warm up during the afternoon, but the competition closed just before it got too warm.
Dogs from each of the 11 breeds were segregated into four groups, in which each breed was represented just once in each group. With each group judged by a pair of senior field trial judges who stayed with their allocated group throughout the day. Being based on the gundog working test format, there were four elements which dogs from each group had to contend, hunting on the stubble, two land retrieves, and a seen water retrieve requiring quite a long swim.
The selection of the four Weimaraners chosen to run, and a reserve was based on a competitive evaluation scheme requiring the handlers to accumulate points from a number of summer gundog working tests across the country, and for each dog, taking the highest scores from three completed tests. Lower scoring performances were discarded as higher ones were attained. Bonus points were available for places earned in working tests with additional points awarded for results obtained from Open working tests. The Weimaraners were ranked according to their best three test scores as enhanced by applicable bonus points.
However, as with all good plans of mice and men, there had to be some tweaking by the two selectors (the FT Secretaries of the two trialling clubs), to cater for the sad loss through illness of the most outstanding dog per our evaluation scheme, bitches coming into season etc. However, late replacements brought into the team by the selectors had still accomplished themselves over the season in working tests.
So all 4 running dogs had been selected on merit and current season performance.
The selectors, Austin Lindley and Nigel Wroe, field trial secretaries of the WCGB and the WA respectively, are delighted to announce that Team Weimaraner gained a third place in the inaugural HPR Team Challenge, behind the GSPs in second place, and the GWPs in first.
The dogs and handlers were:
Cheyenn Makeeta [Otter] (LH) - Roz Richardson
Belfegorus Deya Royal Win for Cheyenn [Deya] - Chrissie Sterritt
Hunterspirit Angel Warrior [Leya] - Jim Kirkham
Feldhund Hotshot [Ruby Tuesday] - Mike Pusey
Several thousand pounds was raised for the British Heart Foundation.
The WCGB and the WA congratulate Lloyd, his team at the WGS, the judges and helpers for a very well run and superbly organised day.

A GWT @ Stourhead - Results
We are pleased to announce the results of Saturday's WA GWT held at Stourhead (21/08/2021) with the kind permission of our hosts, the National Trust, Nick Hoare, Tim White & Gary Thomas. It was a much-anticipated return after last year's lockdown cancellation. Monsoonal rain during the set up but great weather for dogs from the start and a bright end of day.
The WA sincerely thanks our hosts, our dedicated judges, dummy throwers, and helpers behind the scenes, Elaine, Colin & Dee.
Special thanks to the handlers for providing a bumper entry and creating a great atmosphere and being so sporting under the judges. Special mention of the Hungarian Vizsla handlers who provided the largest breed entry of 18 dogs which is personally very gratifying for reasons they will understand.
Congratulations go to those in the awards, and Mark Taylor is commended for achieving a score of 100 points in Novice, and to Mike Ede for his 2nd place in Open and his earning the award of the Aschfahl Isen Trophy for the highest scoring Weimaraner.
The ground is exceptional for its beauty and I am delighted to report that it was left in pristine condition at the end of the day, just as we found it. I applaud all attendees for this special consideration.
A very memorable day. Thank you one and all!
