LATEST NEWS UPDATED 26/05/2025

Di Arrowsmith
The Weimaraner Association is saddened to announce the passing of Di Arrowsmith (Fleetapple) on 25th May 2025. A founder member, former Hon. Secretary and first Field Trial Secretary of the Association. Di moved out of the Secretary role to lead the Association’s foray into field trialling at around the same time the Association received its formal KC registration in 1988. Clearly the Association was in capable hands as Di made up her Weimaraner Wobrooke of Fleetapple (D) to Field Trial Champion, the first such champion in the breed in 1988. “Brooke” was the outstanding Weimaraner of the 1980s, and dog and handler were one of the most accomplished teams in the breed and unsurpassed in achievement until decades later.

Di, as FT Secretary, secured FT status for the Association which ran its first Novice trial on 18/11/1991 and stayed in post until 1994. Di was also a Championship show judge.

Di was FT Secretary of the GSPC for a spell, and then did an extended stint as HPR FT Secretary of the Dukeries (Notts) Gundog Club until in late November 2008 when she was the inspiration for and led the formation of the Hunt, Point, Retrieve Breeds Association, later becoming the Hunt, Point, Retrieve Gundog Association, being a founder member, first elected chair, and holding that position for many years, and ultimately president of the Association.

The Gundog world has lost a person of great charm and wisdom who was greatly admired and who dedicated her life to the advancement of the working gundog, and in particular the HPR.

We offer our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Di.

The Weimaraner Association's annual GPT was held at Westerdale Moor, near Whitby, North Yorkshire on 01/03/2025. It was a very rewarding day for the Association which continued its mission to promote and protect the hunting Weimaraner in line with its founding objectives as it celebrates its 40th Anniversary this year. Three adult Weimaraners were graded on the day and 6 Weimaraners in total competed. Two lively juniors just missed out, and one adult just didn't quite get into the birds. Nevertheless, it was a good turn out from the Weimaraners, the breed having the largest representation on the day. Congratulations to Austin, Suzi and Gil.

The Weimaraner Association ran their Annual Grouse Pointing test at Westerdale Moor, Near Whitby with the kind permission of the Westerdale & Rosedale Estates, at the kind invitation of John Cavana and Bradley Dymond. The day was sponsored by Skinners, and a fundraising raffle was sponsored by The Red Dog Company, (Nick Lambert) with Vizsla owner/handler Rich England picking up the £50 voucher (and whose dog was graded "Good".
The test took place on a most magnificent and well-kept moor, under brilliant sunshine and blue skies. Conditions were ideal for such endeavours, and the judges commended all the dogs who took part, and congratulated those who managed to achieve a grading, of which there were 10. The Association would like to offer their sincere thanks to the hosts, and to our judges and to the helpers on the day. The proceeds of the day and raffle monies were allocated to the chosen charities.

Trevor wins coveted Game Conservancy Award
Barbara Rigby writes about her husband Trevor Rigby, a former WA Life Member, a renowned trainer and mentor to the late Penny Pickstone, being awarded by the Game Conservancy for all the work he has done counting Grey Partridge in  Lincolnshire. Trevor received this from the Lord Lieutenant at the Lincolnshire Show.

Trevor gave thanks to all the farmers who have given access to their ground and to his stepson, Matthew Ball, for all his help with his pointers.

Trevor's Overview of his Epic Count

This years paired count has been challenging to say the least. I relied heavily on my stepson, Matthew Ball and his two pointers to do much of the count and on local landowners/farmers to report pairs seen directly to me. For this help I am extremely grateful and hope it will continue.

This is the highest count of paired English partridge proving that the area counted is an increasing enclave for a species that remains on the critical list of British species.

Whilst some areas have shown increases in population others have suffered a decline in numbers. This is due to the poor weather conditions experienced during the winter and early spring of 2024 - floods, soggy ground unable to be sown and cold winds none of which partridges like.

I suspected that the the partridges gravitated to rape fields for protection. Less rape was available this year to count so numbers dropped accordingly.

It was heartening to see an increase in pairs of English partridges this year and I hope this is an ongoing trend.

Many thanks to you all.

Trevor Rigby, Matthew Ball and his pointers.

The WA Gundog Working Test held at Stourhead, Wiltshire on 19th August 2023

The WA is delighted to announce the results of its GWT held 19th August 2023 at Stourhead, Wiltshire.

Sincere thanks go to the hosts: The National Trust, Stourhead Western Estates, and Gary (Water) and Tim (Grazier)

Especial thanks to our judges. We had Helen Evans [A Panel] and no less than 3 judges who have made up (ginger) FTChs, and two further judges of the ginger persuasion and last but never least, Dave Madden who did the Novice and Open Water!
I must also thank the fine body of men who were quick off the mark to offer me assistance when I became crocked, for help with the set up and take down.

Thanks also to the Novice Steward and all the dummy throwers. Thanks to Colin and Dee and Elaine on kitchen patrol and set up.
Thanks also go to Sue Parr and to Alix, and especially Alix who, in charge of the raffle, raised £185 from our most generous handlers and attendees.

The day went off well and was probably one of the most satisfying for me. The bon homie and the camaraderie among the HPR gathering was for me, heart-warming, and for everyone else, what did you expect they said!
Given the stature of our judges, I do hope all handlers and particularly those in the awards feel the pride and privilege for their achievements.

The Heathstone Memorial Salver  for the highest scoring Weimaraner (95pts) was presented to Austin Lindley for the 2nd year in a row with Bertie (aka St Bertrand des Grandes Maurieres (Imp FRA)).

WA FT SECRETARY AND KCFTLC REPRESENTATIVE
MAKES THE KC B PANEL FOR HPRS

The Weimaraner Association is pleased to announce that our Field Trial Secretary and KC Liaison Council Rep, Nigel Wroe, has today been confirmed as being admitted to the KC B Panel (HPR) of Field Trial judges. As members you will know how hard Nigel has worked to make the Association one of the pre-eminent HPR trialling clubs having put on 27 trials for the WA (including SGWC Days), to add to the 18 he ran for the HVC.

He was appointed as Acting FT Secretary in 2017 and immediately secured new grounds on which to host trials. Now he will regularly host up to 7 trials a season up and down the country, which adds to our annual Gundog Working Test. Not to mention grouse pointing tests and Show Gundog Working Certificate days (a system which may elevate show champions to full champions).

Nigel was instrumental in leading the resumption of field trials after Lockdown under KC guidance. It was his re-working of the KC guide which made for a practical template for the hosting of covid secure field trials, which was then used by a number of like-minded clubs in that difficult season.

Nigel as our KCFTLC Representative (as well as for the HVC, naturally), is very active, with others, submitting proposals and doing his utmost to help secure the future of HPR trialling.

With 45 trials under his belt, he is one of the busiest and most experienced FT Secretary’s currently active, and will often be the go to Chief Steward when other clubs, even the KC, need an experienced pair of hands to ensure the smooth running of their trials. Helping out 3 clubs this recent season with their Open field trials, in addition to the work he does for the Association.

Picture
Pic: Nigel and Kassie, winners of the KC Novice FT (23/10/2019) with Judges S Burton (AP) and F Briley
Nigel will tell you that his proudest moment since taking up the baton for the Weimaraner, was to see the biggest seasonal tally of awards for Weimaraners since they were introduced into the country. This was 25 awards in the 2019/20 season. That and winning a first place at the KC Novice FT in the same season. Today’s news is another proud moment, well earned and much deserved.

Well done Nigel and here’s to the next 45 field trials, all for the WA!

Julie George-Ainscough
Honorary Secretary

The WA is delighted to announce the results of the Grouse Pointing Test held on 4th March 2023 on the North Yorkshire Moors at the kind invitation of John Cavana of the NYMMO. In lieu of a ground fee, the equivalent sum of the aggregate of the entry fees was donated to the worthy cause of the North Yorkshire Moors Moorland Organisation. (Read more about NYMMO at the link).

We are indebted to our hosts, and to our judges on the day, Phil Pearson (AP) and J Cavana, and to B Dymond (Chief Steward), and to our Orange Flag bearer Nicole Coe.

It tried to snow just as we got under way, and was coming in more seriously as we were sheperded off the moor at the end. But during the test, a stiff headwind and bright skies made for a very successful and enjoyable day. Everyone was in high spirits and happy to be out with their dog(s) in such a magnificent setting.

The WA thanks everyone for supporting the day and helping to raise funds for such a worthy cause. And especial thanks to Suzanna for boiling up a decent brew at the end!

Congratulations to all those achieving a grading.

After a season starting at the end of a drought, then suffering persistent rains and then snow, it was a joy to be trialling under blue skies, with decent wind generally, and the cover was surprisingly dry underfoot, with dry, plump and well feathered birds, a mixture of pheasant and partridge. Thanks also go to the entirety of the handlers who, with their very sporting attitude made for a very enjoyable and memorable day. Congratulations to those in the cards.

Today the WA ran a SGWC Day at Grange Farm, Upper Helmsley, changed from the original location of Cropton Forest due to Forestry operations.

After freezing temperatures lately a thaw began to set in but not rapid enough to unfreeze the pond. Starting somewhat overcast with light winds and damp underfoot out in the open fields, the end of season birds tended to get the better of the dogs, running ahead consistently, but there were some good points but some dogs were lost due to retrieving difficulties.
Picture
The WA is indebted to the hosts, judges and guns as well as the helpers. Especial thanks to Mr S Chamberlain for his help in making the ground available after forestry operations at the original venue forced the move.
Congratulations to Mrs Simpson and "Five" for securing a SGWC.

Today the WA ran an All Aged stake at Grange Farm, Upper Helmsley, changed from the original location of Cropton Forest.
We are indebted to the host and the most excellent team of guns and appreciate all those helping in the foreground and the background, and to of course our judges. It was a cold start, wet under foot at times due to overnight rain, and with a stiff wind all day, further depressing the felt temperature due to the chill factor. But at least we had blue skies and a golden orb transiting from the east to the west above our heads. The game was mixed, pheasant and grey partridge with the possibility of woodcock. The terrain stubble turnip and sugar beet, hedges and dykes and warmer woodland. There were hares to test the mettle of a number of dogs.

Thanks go to the entirety of the handlers who maintained their sporting attitude and made for an enjoyable day in good company in spite of the chill.

WEIMARANER ASSOCIATION
RETRIEVING (LAND & WATER) TRAINING DAY

AT MARSH LAKE, BILLINGHAY, LINCOLNSHIRE
The Weimaraner Association held a Water & Land Retrieving training day on the 10th September 2022 at the exclusive Marsh Lake in BILLINGHAY Lincolnshire by kind permission once again of landowner Pete Marshall.

It was a wonderful day beginning with a minute's silence for our late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

It was an overcast morning with a slight westerly wind, clean, algae free water, warmed by the recent hot weather ensured the dogs were best served in terms of conditions.

The trainers expressed that they had witnessed some excellent dog work and confident handling throughout the day among the various HPR's present hoping that everyone had enjoyed the experience as much as they had.

Elaine Bradley with her Hungarian Vizsla together with Paul Spavins and his Weimaraner were duly awarded as the dogs who most impressed the trainers; many congratulations to them.

WA FT Interim Schedule & Entry Form and Standing Instructions 2022/23

Due to uncertainties associated with the outbreak of avian flu in France, and subsequent quarantine regulations, compounded by the high prices of fuel, and game feedstuffs, as a result of the ongoing war in the Ukraine, and other extraneous circumstances, many shooting estates and venues were understandably very late in releasing dates for field trials. The WA does not have all of its planned trial dates available just now, so we are issuing an interim schedule of those trials and venues for which we do have dates.

We have every expectation that further dates and venues will be released in a matter of days, but as our first firm field trial is to be held in Kent on 23rd September 2022, we are releasing an interim schedule today.

Heathstone Memorial Salver for Achievement in Working Tests
In 2021 an inaugural event, the brainchild of Lloyd Birch (Worcester Gundogs) pre-covid was held which pitted teams of HPRs organised by breed in competition along working test lines. Breed team selection was to be by selection processes designed by the breed clubs, and it was expected where breeds were represented by more than one society, there would be collaboration. The FT Secretaries of the two trialling Weimaraner societies devised a selection process by which handlers could earn their place in the team by securing points and places in GWTs in the lead up to the team competition.

By far and away the most accomplished dog in our breed participating in the process was Trubon Harleigh Trojan, handled by Austin Lindley.

Sadly Harleigh was tragically lost to Austin and his family before he could take up his place in the team.

Picture
Austin Lindley Pic: Alan Woodward

Austin was present on the day to cheer on his colleagues and they achieved a 3rd place out of 13 breeds.

Before the announcement of the official results of the day at yesterday's WA GWT @ Stourhead, I was privileged to present the Heathstone Memorial Salver to Austin in respect of Harleigh, and in commemoration of Tony and Pauline Fleming (Heathstone) who bequeathed a substantial legacy to both breed clubs.
Picture

This salver will become a perpetual award for achievement in a working test format by a Weimaraner. It is somehow very fitting that the WA was able to make this first presentation to Austin.

In Memoriam: Jose Wrixon

It is with the greatest of sadness that we inform you of the passing of long time member Jose Wrixon who passed away in Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge on Friday 10th June 2022 with her beloved family round her.

Acquiring her first Weimaraner, Bredebeck Franz in 1975 from the Hardmans, following up with Wyndlee the Wanderer, a longhair in 1987 from Pat Beard. In 1989 Jose and her husband Bill became members of the Association. Later then taking Quadet Axel from Marilyn and Steve Chant. Taking her second longhair Galrhia Alderney from Sue Gallagher, and then finally, fulfilling a long cherished ambition, taking a share in a Slovakian Rough-Haired Pointer with Julie George-Ainscough, Achouffe Provocateur (Rio), sharing in the delights of her success and proudly collecting rosettes and place cards which brought her great joy at some remove, being housebound with illness. No stranger to the show ring in her hey day, Jose also ran training classes.

Jose was to give her considerable energies to the Slovaks, under the late Margaret Holmes, and was instrumental in the Slovakian Rough Haired Pointer Club from the off, even naming their annual Newsletters ‘A Bit of Rough’.

Jose was a first class administrator, serving the Club as chair, and as Hon. Secretary thereafter, being steeped in the history of the breed and of the Club. The Association was very pleased to have her as a member for many years, and every effort was made to keep her fully informed of Association news and events, being one of a small group of treasured and esteemed postal members.

Jose's funeral will take place at Cam Valley Crematorium, Field Farm Drive, Great Chesterford, Saffron Walden, CB10 1FE on Monday the 27th June 2022 at 2pm. The Association's KCFTLC representative is WA FT Secretary Nigel Wroe who also represents the HVC where he was formerly their FT Secretary in parallel with the WA for 6 years. He writes as follows:

As the WA official representative to the KC Field Trials Liaison Council (KCFTLC),  I intend to  canvass WA members from time to time on matters pertaining to the FT rules and regulations and other matters related to the conduct of field trials. Members views will be surveyed using the very helpful survey feature of the Mailchimp application. The views of members are important to establishing true and effective representation of their concerns to the Liaison Council. The field trial interest of WA with its mixture of Weimaraner handlers and handlers of other HPR breeds makes for an ideal and authoritative representative sample.

Many thanks to the hosts, the judges, the guns and helpers who all made this day such a smooth running and pleasurable trial. The weather had been kind overnight, no frost and not too damp underfoot.

Birds evenly spaced throughout the ground and were available for all dogs, but wind conditions could have been a little stronger to favour the dogs. A big hearty breakfast of eggs and bacon to greet us on arrival was an added bonus! A terrific day and a great atmosphere.

HPR Team Challenge held at Piper’s Farm, Near Tewkesbury 5th September 2021
Held in aid of the British Heart Foundation

Today four Weimaraners competed against 44 other dogs from 11 HPR breeds at the inaugural HPR Team Challenge and open working test standard competition hosted and managed by Lloyd Birch and the Worcester Gundog Society. It was held at Pipers Farm near Tewkesbury on farmland comprising extensive fields of stubble, some woodland and in water at a splendid wide and wonderfully picturesque lake, under blue skies with occasional cloud and a light breeze. It did warm up during the afternoon, but the competition closed just before it got too warm.

Special thanks to the handlers for providing a bumper entry and creating a great atmosphere and being so sporting under the judges. Special mention of the Hungarian Vizsla handlers who provided the largest breed entry of 18 dogs .

Pet Blood Bank - Breed of the Month - Weimaraner

A message from Hayley of the Pet Blood Bank:
We are just like the human blood service, but for dogs!  We collect blood donations from donor dogs across the UK which then go towards helping to save the lives of other dogs in need.  Every donation a dog gives can help to save the lives of up to four other dogs.

I am getting in touch because the Weimaraner is a very important breed for us at the charity because they are more likely to have the rarer negative blood type.  This blood type is in very high demand as it can be given to any dog in an emergency.

Please consider allowing your dogs to give blood to help save other dogs? This would help us to ensure we always have this vital blood type in stock for when dogs need it - dogs like Grace, a fellow Weimaraner, who received a lifesaving blood transfusion from one of the dogs who donated to us.

Kind regards
Hayley

Grace: Marie Dennis is the owner of Weimaraner Grace. Following a gastropexy operation in September 2019 where Grace’s spleen was removed after unstoppable bleeding, a blood transfusion thankfully saved her life. She has since survived a pyometra and haemorrhagic gastroenteritis, but at over 14 years old, she loves life! As a way of giving back following Grace’s transfusion, Marie’s other dog Liberty is now a blood donor with Pet Blood Bank.
Marie said, ‘We don’t know how long Grace has now, but every day is a precious bonus which we are making the most of. Her life was saved by the plasma transfusion from Pet Blood Bank, for which I will be forever grateful.’

Pet Blood Bank operates very similarly to the human blood service, but for dogs. First your dog receives a health check from a vet before donating approximately 450ml of blood, which takes around 5-10 minutes. Even better than the human service, though, dogs receive treats all throughout the donation session, as well as plenty of fuss, attention, and cuddles from the team. Dogs even get a lovely tummy rub while lying on the table during their donation. In total, the donation appointment takes around 45 minutes.
If your Weimaraner is between 1 and 8 years old, weighs over 25kg, and is fit and healthy, they could be a lifesaver. Dogs should also be confident and enjoy meeting new people and having new experiences.
Every donation your dog gives can help to save the lives of up to four other dogs!

CHAMPIONSHIP SHOW 2021: It is with deep regret that we announce our Championship Show, scheduled for 2nd May 2021, will be postponed until later in the year.  With the current status of coronavirus in the country, we feel that it would be difficult to put all the necessary safeguards in place to ensure the safety of our judges, helpers, exhibitors and committee members as well as the staff at Oakridge Arena.  I'm sure you will understand the situation and we look forward to seeing you all again when circumstances allow.  As soon as a new date has been agreed we will let you know.
Stay safe.

WA (Novice) @ Cropton Forest - 23/12/2020 CANCELLED:
The above trial has been cancelled under the clear and unambiguous advice of the KC today, 21/12/2020. All remaining licenced events to 1st February 2021 are recommended not to take place. The WA, the host, the guns and the judges are unanimous that this must be complied with.

WA Field Trials 2020/21:
The WA thanks all hosts, judges, guns, helpers and handlers for their support of HPR trialling this season.  It must be said as the season has progressed that the full and enthusiastic observance of the covid security measures we had put in place, by everyone in attendance at our trials, have demonstrably been a success.

Every trial was fully supported, and it was extremely heartening and a pleasure to participate with such a bunch of dedicated and sporting people. Without this unceasing commitment to strict observance it would have been impossible to proceed.

On a personal level the support of many, and the personal encouragement to me over recent months will not be forgotten.
All the best, stay safe, and enjoy your dogs. It is not the end of shooting for the season, so hopefully you can get out with your dogs.

WA FIELD TRIALS 2020/21 LATEST (19/12/2020):
The Association was determined to host its usual complement of field trials for the 2020/21 season, albeit against a background of the current Covid-19 pandemic, subject to Government and Public Health Authority guidelines and regulations, and the Kennel Club's Operational Plan for the Resumption of Field Trials.

The WA 2020/21 FT Schedule announced three field trials for the 2020/21 season, but matters were in hand to confirm up to two more field trials, but the November Second Wave Lockdown put paid to that aspiration.

Our 2020/21trials were:

WATER TRAINING DAY 20th September 2020:
A successful Water Day with Retrieve work held on 20th September 2020 a Saltby Farms Estate Home Farm, Melton Mowbury. Conditions were of dry, sunny yet breezy weather but quite varied depending on ones’ position situated around the lake; for some, mainly for Steve Walton and the Intermediate class this had a distinct disadvantage for them with low facing sun and choppy water where dummies were often difficult to see, so marking was vital.    There was duckweed just under the water’s surface too about two metres out surrounding the groups which added to mix, so it wasn’t all plain sailing... COVID-19 ANNOUNCEMENT: OCTOBER 2020 OPEN SHOW CANCELLED:

Due to the ongoing situation with the coronavirus pandemic, the Officers and Committee of the Weimaraner Association, have discussed at length the viability of holding our Open Show scheduled for 25th October 2020.

Unfortunately, taking into account all the health and safety requirements advised by the Government and the venue itself, and discussing the situation with Mid-Herts Gundog Club (who we hold our show in conjunction with), it has proved unworkable and therefore we have taken the sad decision to cancel our October Show.

We hope you will understand our decision and we look forward to getting ‘back to normal’ in 2021 and welcoming you all back to our events.

Please stay safe and look after your families and your Weimaraners.

2nd Autumn European Weimaraner Cup 2020
To be held in Holland in Early October 2020
The Dutch Weimaraner Club have jointly invited the WA and the WCGB to send a team to Holland in early October 2020 to compete in the above European Competition. It is a field event, which is part of their 50th Anniversary celebrations. It is the second time the competition will have been held. It was first held in Tuscany in 2018 when the Italian Weimaraner Club were the hosts.

Both FT Secretaries of our trialling breed societies have agreed to co-ordinate a joint team, as we have done over the recent UK based, HPR Team Challenge (based on a GWT format). The membership of the WA should standby for news as it emerges. Some details have already been posted on the revamped WA website HERE.
