WA Water Training Day Sunday 29th September 2024
Well, what a super, fun and fruitful day we all had despite being overcast in the morning with a brisk easterly windchill gathering speed in the afternoon, which was a stark contrast from the previous warm winds of the day before. The ground, and although cold, the lake were both exquisitely presented as usual with many grateful thanks to landowner Mr Pete Marshall once more for allowing the WA its use.
Our trainers, Maureen Nixon, Andy Lord and Richard ‘Chilli’ Chellumbrun were amazing giving each of their groups and handlers plenty of faith and encouragement with fantastic results and lots of positive remarks including ideas and what worked for you to take away. Awards by way of gifted ‘Sporting Saint’ Lanyards, Dummies & Slip Leads were presented by the trainers to Cheryl Hill (Weim), Tilly Clayton (GSP), and Kelly Mountain (Weim) who had an exceptional day, but basically everyone thoroughly enjoyed their day and all the dogs got wet! with even the most hesitant of youngsters eventually retrieving from the water. The highlights of course and what made it really special was Maureen Nixon taking the Beginners/Puppy group in her waders armed with a huge fishing tackle landing net! she is such a legend in her own right and Mark Hodgkinson’s personal retrieve curtesy of an enthusiastic dummy throw by Andy Lord (landing high up in a tree) from the island at the end of the day via the safety boat, simply hilarious!
Thank you so much to each and everyone of you in attendance, together you really do make these days so special. Photos are curtesy of mine and Cheryl Hill’s iPhone, and Debbie Wearing’s fab Pro Camera, thank you both. If your dog is amongst these images’ permission has been granted to download. Enjoy…

it was an early misty start for many handlers who were met with a crisp northerly wind across the lake. However, the clean water was still warm from the previous late good weather so still enticing for the dogs. Each inexperienced non swimmers and youngsters were swimming by the end of the day much to the delight of their owners. When the sun came out it was warm away from the shade of the trees. Every group who swapped over from land to water retrieves enjoyed their time using this precious lake and its surrounding ground and the trainers expressed their pleasure with the results.
Trainer Nigel Cox stated, “There was much gained from the trainers and most of the dogs were of a good standard, and can look forward to a higher standard still.
Trainer Steve Walton also said, “when one gets handlers who are really interested and listen to what you have to say, its even more enjoyable!”
Most improved dogs on the day nominated by the trainers were:
No.11 Weipowa Double O'Seven - Weimaraner - C Hill
No.13 Rochus Tosca - Brittany - M Dennehey
No.18 Patouche Oriana avec Petillant - Brittany - S Ryan
No17 Ekkolander Dark Shadow - Large Munsterlander - I O'Brien

The Weimaraner Association held a Water & Land Retrieving training day on the 10th September 2022 at the exclusive Marsh Lake in BILLINGHAY Lincolnshire by kind permission once again of landowner Pete Marshall.
It was a wonderful day beginning with a minute's silence for our late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
It was an overcast morning with a slight westerly wind, clean, algae free water, warmed by the recent hot weather ensured the dogs were best served in terms of conditions. The trainers expressed that they had witnessed some excellent dog work and confident handling throughout the day among the various HPR's present hoping that everyone had enjoyed the experience as much as they had.
Elaine Bradley with her Hungarian Vizsla together with Paul Spavins and his Weimaraner were duly awarded as the dogs who most impressed the trainers; many congratulations to them.

Report of the Day: Well after much thought, having to source some good secure ground with enough good fresh water, liaising with landowners and keepers, updating our WA Risk Assessments to include Test and Trace forms, our Privacy Policy etc, an additional Rule of 6 Notice, which came into effect five days prior, we were confident that a Covid Secure event could take place for our WA Water Training Day. On the above I would first of all like to thank Frazer Jolly who kindly gave us permission to use the land and its water at Saltby Farms Estate where he is their Manager for without his passion for the countryside, associated pursuits and his love and understanding of gundogs this day simply couldn’t have gone ahead at all. A huge thank you also to our three trainers on the day who were Carl Issitt, Steve Walton and Mark Hodgkinson who gave up their time, all Weimaraner personnel. Together with our participants the whole day was amazing.
Coloured armbands were zip-locked and packed up 72 hours previously for participants who were marshalled into groups from the Car Park in the morning and given their bands, allocated to their trainers to remain as such for the day. There were separate tables for trainers and handlers each containing the necessary sanitiser gel, wipes, gloves and masks. We began with our normal health & safety briefing and identification of safety officers including the CO (Covid Officer) before taking up our positions. Conditions were of dry, sunny yet breezy weather but quite varied depending on ones’ position situated around the lake; for some, mainly for Steve Walton and the Intermediate class this had a distinct disadvantage for them with low facing sun and choppy water where dummies were often difficult to see, so marking was vital. There was duckweed just under the water’s surface too about two metres out surrounding the groups which added to the mix, so it wasn’t all plain sailing. |
The experienced group began with some cover work before moving off and the inexperienced got straight to it. However, all including non-swimmers had some exciting blind and seen retrieves on land and from water; some worked on delivery but laughter outweighed any whistle work each participant thoroughly enjoying their day and the dogs just loved it, they appeared to be so happy to be out on different ground and away from their norm. It was great to safely catch up with people old and new, a chance to see youngsters too who have unfortunately been the casualties of these uncertain times. Following a trainers debrief and small presentation of a lanyard to the most improved dog on the day from each group participants left for home most feeling elated with shared knowledge and approaches to work on.
