History: No one really knows how it all began!
Picture
Circa 1533: Jakob Seisenegger painted this portrait of Charles V. It is thought perhaps the first pictorial reference to an antecedent the Weimaraner.

Picture
Circa 1632: Anthony van Dyke It is thought perhaps the first convincing pictorial reference to the Weimaraner in a portrait of Prince Rupprecht von der Pflaz where he stands with a silver grey hunting dog.  The oil painting is at the Hague in the Netherlands.

Circa1750: Painting (left) by Jean Baptiste Oudry. Perhaps more Pointer than Weimaraner!

Circa 1850: In Germany, especially in Weimar and Thuringia hunting dogs were bred to hunt boar and deer.  These dogs were in the hands of the aristocracy and were believed to be the beginning of the Weimaraner. Later bred to Pointers and Setters making them into the all round dog we are familiar with today.
In the grounds of the estate can be found memorials to his dogs. One is believed to be a memorial to a Longhaired Weimaraner.

because of its colour the Weimaraner was a breed in itself.

1897: 20th June the first club was formed in Germany It was named 'Club
for the Pure Breeding of the Silver-grey Weimaraner Vorstehund' it was
soon changed to the slightly shorter 'Society for the Breeding of the
Weimaraner-Vorstehund.
